Thursday, May 7: THE CONNECTICUT RIVER ESTUARY SYMPOSIUM
- The symposium will be held at the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection's Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme Connecticut, located directly on the shore of the Connecticut River.
Friday and Saturday May 8 and May 9: Regular Oral and Poster Presentations
- The Friday and Saturday scientific presentations will be in the Blaustein Humanities Center on the campus of Connecticut College in New London, CT.
REGISTRATION:
- Request a FAXed copy of the registration from from Elizabeth Sundstrom at 860-439-5021 (voice), 860-439-2519 (voice) or emsun@conncoll.edu
- The preregistration fee is $27 for Regular members and $16 for students. Checks and registration forms should be sent to Pam Arnofsky, Treasurer, Redfield Building, Mail Stop 34, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Woods Hole, MA 02543 to arrive by April 24. Registration after April 24 will be at the conference site with fees of $30 for Regular Members and $18 for students. The NEERS registration desk will be open 0800 to 1000 Thursday and Friday mornings. One-day registration for the Connecticut River symposium will be available on-site for $10 on a "space available" basis.
NEERS THURSDAY NIGHT SOCIAL:
- The traditional Thursday night social will be May 7 in "The Cro's Nest" at the Crozier Williams College Center on the Connecticut College campus. Cash Donation Bar with NEERS supplied munchies.
LUNCHES:
- Lunch will be available on-site both Thursday and Friday for a cost of $8.00 each day. Thursday will be a box lunch. DEP's Marine Headquarters is on a site perfect for picnicking with brackish tidal marshes an easy board-walk stroll from the meeting room. Think pure thoughts about the weather! Saturday lunch can be purchased at the College Center.
AWARDS BANQUET:
- The Awards Banquet will be held on campus. Dinner entrees will include your choice of toasted mustard seed chicken, grilled tuna with lime butter, beef Elba, or vegetarian lasagna with white sauce for a pre-registration price of $30.00. The Banquet is free to student prize candidates.
DANCING:
- Tentative plans are to meet at New London's (in)famous El 'n Gee Club, but other sites are also available and final choice of venue will depend upon the band! Directions will be provided at the Banquet.
POSTERS:
- NEERS continues to encourage poster presentations. 4' x 4' poster boards will be available; you may use one or two. Poster Session Friday afternoon, May 8.
STUDENT PRIZES:
- At each meeting NEERS awards three prizes recognizing the best student papers as judged on scientific content, clarity and professionalism of presentation, and graphics. The top oral presentations receive The Ketchum Prize (graduate student) and the Rankin Prize (undergraduate student); the David Dean Prize is awarded to the best student poster with both graduate and undergraduate students eligible. Awards are $100 each and prize candidates receive free banquet tickets. NEERS greatly appreciates contributions towards the endowment for these prizes!
ACCOMMODATIONS:
- A block of rooms has been reserved at the New London Holiday Inn, just about a mile from campus. Prices are $58 for one person and $68 double occupancy. Call for reservations before April 16 (860-442-0631) and make it clear that you are with NEERS. A bit further away, but still close, the Windsor Motel (860-445-7474) has a second block of rooms at $64 (1 twin and 1 double bed, microwave and refrigerator) and $70 (2 twin beds and full kitchenette). Call for reservations before April 14 and make it clear that you are with NEERS.
DIRECTIONS:
- DEP Marine Headquarters, Ferry Road, Old Lyme, Connecticut:
- >From Boston/Providence/New London: I-95 South to Exit 70, Old Lyme. Straight through lights at the bottom of the exit ramp and continue ca. 1/2 mile; go through the next set of lights (strip-malls on both sides of the road) to the third and a T intersection with route 156. Left onto 156, under I-95, Marine HQ is at the end of Ferry Road. We will be meeting in the furthest building behind the main HQ; park in the lot to the south of the main HQ and walk east. There will be signs.
- From New York and west: I-95 North to Exit 70, immediately after the Connecticut River bridge. Right at the lights at the end of the exit ramp and onto route 156, then ca. 1/2 mile to the first right, Ferry Road.
- Connecticut College, Route 32, Mohegan Avenue, New London, CT:
- >From Boston/Providence: I-95 South to Exit 84N, immediately after the Gold Star Bridge over the Thames River, to Route 32 North. The College's main entrance is on the left at the second set of lights. Take a left at the gatehouse to the South Parking Lot >
- From NH/Maine: I-495 to I-290 to I-395 to Exit 77 for Route 32, New London/Groton (a left exit). South(right) at the end of the connector ca. 2.5 miles to the College's main entrance, on the right.
- >From New York/New Haven: I-95 North to Exit 83 and follow Route 32 ca. 1 mile north to the College's main entrance, on the left. Directions and a map are on the Campus Visitors Guide.
